Uganda’s opposition leader Bobi Wine has been shot in the leg by security agents in Kampala, the capital. Wine, also known as Robert Kyagulanyi, was runner-up in the 2021 presidential election behind President Yoweri Museveni. His party, the National Unity Platform, announced that security operatives attempted to harm him.

Police claimed that they attempted to stop Wine and his squad from marching down a road, leading to a fight. An inquiry will be conducted to clarify the facts. A video on social media shows NUP party officials helping Wine stagger out of the Najeem Medical Centre in Bulindo district. Wine appeared to have a bleeding wound on his left leg, and he was wincing in pain.

NUP Party Secretary-General David Lewis Rubongoya condemned the action and the continued violence against those opposing the Museveni government. Museveni’s government has been accused of repressing the opposition, which it rejects. A US State Department official expressed concern that violence against opposition voices means the democratic space in Uganda is shrinking. Wine has gained a significant following among the youth in Uganda, with many initially drawn to his rags-to-riches story as a pop singer and his daring criticism of Museveni’s regime.
