The Somali Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education has declared the availability of scholarships for 30 Sudanese students pursuing higher education in Somalia.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry emphasized the historical assistance Sudan has provided to Somalia, particularly during periods when Somalia lacked a functional government.
The Sudanese Government is notably remembered for its support of our nation and populace by offering scholarships for higher study during the absence of a Somali government, according to the Ministry.
The statement said that this program is part of Somalia’s extensive efforts to promote educational and cultural collaboration with the Republic of Sudan.
The Somali Embassy in Sudan endorsed the decision, commending the Ministry for its support of the Sudanese people at a period of adversity. “This is an important step for Somalis to show their support for their Sudanese brothers and sisters, as the ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to the closure of most universities, severely disrupting the education of many students,” the Embassy stated in a statement.
The Sudanese civil war, started last year, features death toll estimates that fluctuate significantly. According to physicians in the area, the number of individuals murdered might be between 20,000 and an even more horrific 150,000. This occurs after over 2 million fatalities during two decades of conflict in South Sudan and Darfur. Since April 2023, it is believed that over 7 million Sudanese have been displaced from their homes and are confronting famine in the desert. Their narratives hardly appear in the news.
