The Need for Strict Laws Against Treason and Foreign Interference

A law should be in place to prevent any former government official, any parliament member, or any Somali citizen from denying the unity and independence of Somalia.  Harsh measures are required of those who support Somalia’s opponents. The current Ethiopian regime has demonstrated that it intends to take Somalia’s land and sea territories and appears arrogant in meetings.

For instance, Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs ordered Ethiopia to pull its missions, including its embassies and consulates, in Garowe and Hargaisa. However, local administrative figures paid no attention to such directives. Any leader who fails the test of discerning between the good of the nation and that of himself poses a threat to the total security of the nation. They should not run for higher political office because they cannot distinguish between national and personal interests.

While imposing the toughest laws, the government should also treat those involved in treason and espionage the same way as other countries do. One can achieve success only by being careful around everyone and avoiding hasty permissiveness. Those who enjoy opening cracks in the Somali community may work for Ethiopia. These people are disseminating rumors with the aim to inflame a situation, create confusion, and demoralize citizens, eroding their support.

The government, especially the intelligence agency, ought to pursue these individuals aggressively, like a ‘football’ that is being chased relentlessly. ENDF is not participating in peacekeeping but in activities like destabilizing Somalia, arming tribal conflicts, fueling rival problems, supporting the Alshabaab, and possibly prolonging a war of attrition that could result in the destruction of the nation and its people. Because they prevent Somalia from achieving peace and stability, the AU and UN should not include the Ethiopian army in their peacekeeping missions.
