A disturbing video has emerged on social media, depicting a young Yemeni refugee kid in Garowe enduring a severe beating. The clip has incited extensive indignation across Puntland and greater Somalia, with both residents and government officials vehemently denouncing the conduct.

In reaction to the public outrage, the mayor of Garowe, along with officials from the Puntland administration, including the Ministry of Women and Family Development, issued a sincere apology to the boy’s parents. Puntland authorities have committed to providing tangible help, promising to pay the family’s living costs and safeguard their safety and dignity.

Puntland, Somalia, hosts many refugees, including those from Yemen, Syria, and Ethiopia, who have fled violence and adversity. This event highlights the need to maintain humanitarian principles and safeguard at-risk populations, guaranteeing that all individuals—irrespective of nationality—are accorded dignity and respect in line with international human rights norms.

Puntland’s government swiftly intervened, reaffirming its commitment to child safety and establishing a precedent for responsibility and compassion towards internally displaced persons and refugees.
