Egypt will engage in discussions with Somalia next week on Cairo’s military deployment within a global force against Islamist terrorists in the Horn of Africa.

Discussions are arranged for January 15-17 in Cairo, as stated by Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Balcad. In the previous month, Egypt’s foreign minister said that the nation would deploy soldiers to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in response to a request from Somalia.

Somalia is contemplating rescinding its decision to remove Ethiopian soldiers from the peacekeeping operation. The transition occurs in the context of easing tensions between the two neighboring countries, facilitated by Turkish mediation.

Balcad said that the size of the Ethiopian contingent permitted entry into the nation remains uncertain.

Ethiopia has been a key contributor to the United Nations-supported force against al-Shabaab, a terrorist organization affiliated with al-Qaeda, for almost two decades.
